Our Leather
We use a domestic English finished bridle leather in our halters, belts, dog collar and more. We have two excellent Kentucky Leather Companies that supply our needs. One we have worked with for years and have developed our special Q-Tan Colour for our halters and strap work. This leather is lightly dipped before leaving our shop, to give it a warm brown colour and soft feel, while remaining a very robust halter.
Our other Kentucky Leather Company supplies our drum dyed bridle leather that is used in our belt, collars and personal leather goods. We have seen many of our halters and belts last for over two decades with the brass fittings actually wearing out before the leather. As with all our Quillin Made Leather Goods - only the finest materials and traditional craftsmanship goes in to these heirloom products.
Traditionally Kentucky Halters were made with Skirting leather. It is a type of heavy vegetable-tanned leather that is commonly used for making saddles, belts, and other leather goods. It is known for its durability and strength, making it ideal for products that require a lot of wear and tear.
English Finished Bridle leather is a type of leather made from cowhide or steerhide that has been vegetable tanned using high-quality domestic animals and natural oils and tallows. Vegetable tanning is a natural and traditional method of tanning leather using plant-based materials. The leather is then dyed in drums to create rich and uniform colors using waxes and tallows, which are fatty substances.
