    The Quillin Difference

A note from the shop floor at 716 Main Street

Every so often somebody asks us why a Quillin halter costs what it costs when there's a halter on a shelf somewhere else for less. Fair question. Here's the honest answer.

Most tack shops make very little

if anything. They are retailers not craftsmen.

Walk into most tack shops — good ones, reputable ones, the halters on the wall came off a truck. They were ordered from a supplier ‘scatalog, made in a factory somewhere, shipped in bulk, and hung up for sale. The shop's craft is in curating and selling. That's a real skill. It's just not the same skill as making.

There's nothing wrong with that model. It's how most retail works, and it's how most tack shops survive. But it means when something goes wrong with the stitching, or you want a strap an inch shorter, or the leather doesn't fit your horse's head right — They can’t walk the halter into the shop for a quick fix - because that workroom just does not exist.
